Gary Long

Hello everyone. I was honored to be mentioned on this website. I love telling folks about how I was able to turn my serious health conditions around at the age of 51. I was on 9 different medicines and could not walk or stand for more than a few minutes at a time. My Doctor told me not to walk for more than 20 minutes or to lift more than 20 lbs, due to my congestive heart failure. My wife and I had accepted the fact that I would not live much longer. Sometimes when my heart was acting up, we would sit and cry, thinking that it was all over. Little did I know that God was about to change history through me.

One Christmas Morning In 2005, I woke and told my wife Cheryl that I was going to "start walking today" and not quit until I either die or get healthier. I think Cheryl thought I was just talking, but that very day I went outside and walked about 1/2 mile or so. The next day I did it again, then again and again. After 6 weeks I was able to walk 10 miles.

I knew I had a mental problem when it came to food. I would eat healthy in front of people, even my wife. But when I got alone, I would eat anything and everything I could get my hands on. After that, I would cry like a baby and wish I could just die and get it over with. I knew that if I stayed at home I would never be able to break the cycle of eating no mater how hard I tried. So, On 15 Feb. 2006 I set off on a trek that would take me across America. I thought that the hardship of being out there would break the vicious cycle I was in. I thought it would be tough on me and the food would not be plentiful, therefore, I would have to lose weight. I was not sure if I would live or die out there, but I knew I would die for sure if I didn't try something.

I lost an average of 12 lbs a month at first, then toward the later part of the walk, I lost nearly 8lbs a week. Walking across the Desert alone took off 80 lbs in 3 months.

The end results are that I not only lost 150 lbs in 1 year, I was no longer a diabetic and I no longer had congestive heart failure or high blood pressure. My cardiologist was amazed and said I may be possibly the first human in recorded medical history that has reversed congestive heart failure.

Today at 53 years of age, I am a very healthy man. I have my life back. I don't need medicine anymore. I can now walk anywhere I want and I don't get tired. I go to the gym every day now and I love it.

I wonder how many Gary Longs there are out there. How many people just give up? One Doctor said that we have to give up on this generation and try and educate the next generation about the dangers of obesity. When I heard that, the first words out of my mouth was "Don't give up on me!"

Well folks, I promise you this, I will not give up on you. I want to tell the world not to give up. Every man, woman or child can do something about obesity. It all starts with, "Do you want to give up?"

If you have a weight problem, and I don't care what your health conditions are, you do not have to give up. I am starting a 3 day boot camp that you can attend in St. Louis, Mo. It cost nothing, and it will change your life.

Amazing
by: Shashank from India

You sure did prove something to this world, for me who is congratulating you from the other end of it. Recently I got diagnosed with high blood pressure and I am just 24, which made me very upset as to what else I would get when I reach 40 or maybe 50. But you my friend have shown me a very decent way to thrown out my medication.
Very Inspirational!!

Thank you so much Gary for encouraging me. I have had it with blood pressure meds and I have been exercising for years it doesn't seem to be controlled no matter how I eat or exercise. But I tell you what I will continue to jog or walk whatever it takes because I know God is no respecter of persons and if he can do it for you I know he will do it for me. God bless you and I pray that you continue to share your successes in life it is people like you who allow me to have faith.

incentive
by: Alice Wedderburn

Hello to anyone reading this post.
Are you like me? do you comfort eat?
I have just been given the biggest incentive to lose weight after reading Gary Long's post. I am obese (219kg) and have high blood pressure, but i am not in poor health.. yet! I don't want to get to that stage and now have the inspiration to get out there and walk too. I thought about going for a walk yesterday, but didn't do it, so i think fate brought me to this post today. Thank you to family and friends and to Gary Long

Alice :)

Wow, thanks to you we now walk to school
by: Michelle from Spain

This is such an inspiring story - thanks for sharing.

I have started walking to school and back with my three children. It takes us 40 minutes to get there, then I walk back alone, which takes 35 minutes. That's more than 6 hours walking a week.

My husband collects the children and they walk again!

I think it is very important to get into the habit of walking before you get as ill as Gary, and nowadays children get out of the habit so easily.

Today we were 5 mothers and ten children, all having fun on the way to school. I don't think we will be getting any high blood pressure problems!

We Need You Here In England
by: Gem from highbloodpressureinfo.org

A moving story indeed Gary!

We need your inspiration here in England, where we are facing a growing weight problem among the youth as well as the adults. I reckon a lot has to do with a growing trend within the schools and the community.

Games and sport don`t seem to be encouraged as much as they used to when I was a child and even the community spirit is fading where children would be seen in the street skipping together, playing rounders, or football, girls against boys.

What you are doing is fantastic. We need people to know drugs are not the best answer, that`s why I have featured your story on this site.

"One foot in front of the other!" Indeed!

MR OVERCOMER
by: LUKE

WOW what a story,,,,,
when my oldest boy played, i was known for one thing... the crazy yell i had , every game.. my boy was a star , who played goal for a very weak team,,, and i sat up in the stands every game... and in every lull in the action , i SCREAMED ,,, NEVER NEVER GIVE UP..this is my life motto,, my boys today still talk about me being the man who preaches to never give up...
you sir take the cake, pardon the metaphor... you sir are the leader and the overcomer that your family and those around you need to see and emulate...
now take the same zeal, and pursue your purpose,, for to have received such a second chance , without a purpose would make it all about just you and your feelings,, which is wonderful,, but there can be so much more,,,
you are designed for leadship in you sphere,,
