How I Dropped My Blood Pressure

by Joy
(Hardy, VA)

I cut out sugar and bread and lost 20 lbs in three months. My blood pressure has dropped to 116/75 (occasionally a little higher, occasionally a little lower). I am on BP medication, but I am monitering myself daily so my doctor can make the decision whether or not I can reduce my dosage or eventually get off it completely.

Sugar Could be Causing Your HBP
by: Gem from HighBloodPressure.org

Don`t be surprised!

The latest research [Reducing Consumption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Is Associated With Reduced Blood Pressure] reveals a definite relationship between sugar and high blood pressure. The trial was led by Liwei Chen, MD, PhD at the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, involving 810 adults with both prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension.

Over a trial period of 18 months a significant reaction was observed. Just reducing 1 can of sugar sweetened beverage every day dropped systolic BP by 1.8 mmHg and diastolic BP by 1.1 mmHg.

All the data showed that it was the reduction of sugar and not caffiene or diet beverage that was causing the change.

It doesn`t seem a lot, but if a person is drinking more than 1 can a day, cutting out could mean a great deal.

More research is needed to determin the implications of sugar`s direct link to high blood pressure. We already know it`s connection to obesity, it`s affect on the pH buffering system, and it`s leading role in diabetes. But researchers are focusing their attention on other mechanisms that may be affected by dietary sugar intake.

Could sugar be raising uric acid having an effect on the relaxation of blood vessels causing them to constrict? Could a regular overconsumption lead to a prolonged reduction in sodium excretion increasing the risk of cardiovascular death? Or does too much sugar have an effect on the sympathetic nervous system, causing more restriction of blood vessels and raising blood pressure?

All these areas are potential answers to how dietary sugar has a direct link on blood pressure. We will have to wait and see. But in the mean time, we can make a difference by cutting down on sugar intake and improving our health.

me, too

Yes, I cut out refined carbs when my blood sugar hit the diabetic range ( AIC 6.0).
4 months later and 20 pounds lighter, my blood pressure dropped from an average of 140/85 to 125/65.
My question is, why did it happen so suddenly and not just gradually?
