Olmetec (olmesartan) - Side Effects...and a bit more.

This is an angiotensin 2 receptor antagonist (20mg)
I had been on this drug for about two months when I began to notice side effects. They included slight dizziness when standing up from squatting (weeding garden etc.), lapse of concentration (doing cryptic crosswords),memory lapses (buying groceries without list). These were all very minor but annoying nonetheless. The first month there were no side effects at all. But during the second month I did some breathing exercises changing from a mouth breather to a nose breather. This had an immediate effect on my BP which dropped to an average of about 111/55 during the day and my pulse ranged from 79 to 106. I stopped taking the olmetec and the symptoms disappeared.BP went to an average of 136/77 and BP normalised around 77.

I am male 69yrs, weigh 75kg and am 1.78m (5ft 10"). I have no other health problems and I smoke and drink.
Ten years ago I was 95kg and have progressively dropped 10kg this has tended to lower my BP generally but from time to time it was inclined to vary noticeably (labile BP). Until I did the breathing exercises taking the meds never bothered me...I was resigned to being on them for life. That has now changed. I intend to fully discuss this with my doctor of course.

The breathing exercises (change from mouth to nose) were discovered when I began to research Asthma (wife has this) and I discovered the Buteyko Breathing Method. It also works for BP and I recommend everyone to Google it and find out more.

Gem`s Note - You can read more about Buteyko Breathing here...

Excessive Use of Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonists
by: Gem

These posts are revealing that patients are failing to question their doctors about the treatment he/she is proscribing, or reading the fact sheet that comes with your medication explaining the common and "uncommon" side effects.

This drug clearly states that the common side effects are dizziness, insomnia, headache, and fatigue. Your doctor should also advise you not to change from one position to another quickly as it can cause dizziness and fainting.

Olmetec (Olmesartan) is an Angiotensin 11 Receptor Antagonist which block receptors producing 3 different actions.

Without having to know all the medical details, these drugs are interfering with the natural mechanisms of your arteries. Not something you or your doctor should take lightly.

If a patient is suffering from white coat hypertension why should the doctor medicate him with this drug which is under investigation as being a slight cause of heart attack and cancer?

A good doctor will be more concerned about a patients lifestyle habits and see what can be done to change to healthier ones, before embarking on any course of medication would he not?

Olmetec Dizziness
by: Anonymous

This is so interesting. I am 24 years old and was having some chest pains. My doctor said that i was having high blood pressure and wanted to treat it. He put me on olmetec. The first month i felt okay, dizzy from time to time, but it brought my heart rate down. In the second month I fainted while on the medicine at work and have had alot of dizziness and forgetfulness like you too.

Olmetec
by: Alex

I was overweight at 95kg and my GP tested my BP and found it a little on the high side...I think it was 'white coat hypertension' because BP was normal when tested by me. Also and incidentally it was normal when taken by the (female) nurse.
Whether it was fear of the doc. I don't know. Maybe it was fear of possible medical consequences?
In any case the GP assured me that medication would do no harm and in any event with BP the lower the better (within reason). Now at 75kg I am no longer concerned about it.
Losing 20kg was interesting. I tried exercise, biking and walking and also went to the Gym. That didn't work although I became noticeably fitter.
What eventually worked was simply eating less. I stopped snacking and didn't bother with lunch.
My energy levels were unaffected and I still eat minimally. Hope this answers your enquiry. If not please let me know.

So why Alex were you prescribed Olmetec in the first place, since your bp seems to be perfectly stable without the need for medication?
Kind regards, Rick
