A list of Foods Containing Potassium
In Abundance
The majority of the foods containing potassium in abundance on my full list found here are herbs and vegetables. On this page I am going to discuss five fruits from that list, and they are:
-
- Papaya
- Peach
- Orange
- Raspberry
- Strawberry
As part of a well balanced diet we need to add fruit daily if we can. The Recommeded Daily Allowance is 5 pieces of fruit. If you need to boost your potassium then these and the other fruits on my list are the best choice.51. Papaya (Carica papaya) – 1 Papaya = 781 mg of potassium
In Mexico they call it melon zapote. In the Caribbean, fruta bomba. In the South Sea Islands and Australia, papaw. In Brazil, mãmao!
As you can see, one of the best foods containing potassium in abundance is the papaya. It`s loaded! If you select this fruit to add to your shopping trolley, you are also going to benefit a whole lot more from it`s health properties. They are known as “melon on a tree”, but also as “the medicine tree”. The health benefits are tremendous and you can use all the parts of the plant.
The milk in the unripe fruit, stems and leaves is anthelmintic, meaning it contains a substance that destroys worms in the intestines. It helps diabetics, aids digestion, helps digest meat, eggs, milk and bean protein which helps the pancreas function better. Protects against infection. All these health benefits are the result of an enzyme called papain. When the fruit is still on the tree, the skin of the unripe fruit is lightly scratched to ooze out papain just under the skin, which is gathered in receptacles for pharmaceutical products.
52. Peach (Prunus persica) – 1 peach = 165 mg of potassium
Along with the potassium in peaches, the beta carotene they contain combined with vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium, is also said to be beneficial in lowering high-density lipoprotein, improving the health of some hypertensive patients. Not forgetting their anti-oxidant properties, peaches are a great source for fighting free radical damage throughout the body.
Peaches and cream anyone?
53. Orange – (Citrus sinensis) – 1 medium orange = 237 gm of potassium
Oranges are foods containing potassium at a fair level, but have you heard of herperidin? It is a phytonutrient molecule found in the peel and pulp of oranges that researchers found to reduce high blood pressure in animals. So drinking orange with the pulp is what you need for peak benefits.
…and I always thought it was just good for vitamin C and it`s antioxidant properties and potassium.
54. Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) – 1 cup = 187 gm of potassium
Raspberries are one of the foods highest in insoluble fiber content through the seeds it contains, soluble fiber pectin that helps control cholesterol, and a potent antioxidant with a high ORAC value of around 4900 per 100 gm. Pretty impressive in the world of antioxidants.
The are also thought to be anti-inflammatory, and anti-thrombotic. So choosing them for their potassium levels and these other benefits will be a plus in fighting high blood pressure.
55. Strawberry – (Fragaria ×ananassa – 1 cup = 240 mg of potassium
I just love strawberries. Do You? When I see them appear on the fruit stalls it reminds me of Tennis at Wimbledon and then summer. I prefer the smaller fruits to the larger. They are sweeter and firmer too. As one of the best foods containing potassium, strawberries are a fresh, alternative choice for the fruit bowl. Don`t leave them too long before consuming as they ripen pretty quick in warm weather. Strawberries are an aid to the sluggish liver so may be a good booster after a detox.
I read from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry an article by J. Agric, that highlighted some research carried out on different strawberry cultivars. They found that some cultivars had more potent antioxidant benefits than others. If you see Earliglow strawberries, buy them because they ranked the best.
Strawberries and Cream anyone?
